about

Bewaa is a tradition of Ghanaian xylophone music pedagogically taught by master xylophonist Bernard Woma at the Dagara Music Center in Medie, Ghana. Traditional Ghanaian xylophone is performed with two xylophones and a percussionist, often accompanied by a dance and drum troupe during social gatherings and performances. The music is usually taught on one xylophone, with the student opposite the master, who teaches the patterns backwards. The student must learn all patterns facing forward, before attempting to perform them on the opposite side of the gyil.

Brittany Anjou pays respect to this tradition and experience she had studying with xylophonists Bernard Woma, Jerome Balsab, and Alfred Kpebsaane at the Dagara Music Center in 2006.

This album is part of Brittany Anjou's BEWAA Chronology:
